Possibly, low self-efficacy encompasses a feeling of having low control over oneself as well as a lack of motivation to act and to believe in oneself. Previous research has conceptualized specific forms of self-efficacy with relevance to social anxiety and restricted its possible role in maintaining social anxiety in clinical groups only (Gaudiano & Herbert, 2007). Our findings suggest that self-efficacy has a profound role in both the experience of social anxiety and the experience of resulting amounts of social impairment, emphasizing the importance of further investigations on the ways in which perceived selfefficacy influences individual experiences of social difficulties.rn We were further able to show that dysfunctional coping partly mediates the relationship between low self-efficacy and experienced impairment from social anxiety, independently of degree of social anxiety and related perceived social impairment, providing support for the idea that the representation and study of social anxiety as a continuum is likely to further our understanding of the causal trajectories in its development and maintenance.rn The results from this study indicate a negative relationship between measures of social anxiety (SIAS and SPS) and related subjective experiences of social impairment, and self-efficacy and social control, confirming previous suggestions that perceptions of oneself as having a bad ability to cope with different situations, as well as not having control in social situations specifically, is associated with higher levels of social anxiety and experiences of this anxiety being handicapping .
